And Now, for My Next Trick...

Antler Buttons

This is the project I've started since my trip. This will be a simple cardigan, made from a pattern published by the Peace Fleece company. The pattern is called the Everyday Cardigan, and I suspect it will be fairly straightforward to knit up.

I'm using yarn spun from my friend Jan's sheep. Jan, in addition to owning The Rose & Ram in Independence, has a flock of about 3 dozen shetland sheep. Twice a year, she has a big sheep sheering party and her friends, knitters and spinners can help with the work. Jan generally schedules these events during the week, so due to my job I've been unable to attend.

The fleeces are then available for purchase by folks who want to learn or know how to prep the fiber and then spin it up into yarn. The rest of us have to wait until the fleeces are spun, usually by a local company like Silver Falls Spinnery or Fantasy Fibers

I first saw this yarn when it was a fleece in a bag in Jan's shop. The sheep is named Diego, and this year his fleece was very dark and glossy. As soon as she had it spun up, I bought enough to make a big, warm sweater. The yarn is a very dark charcoal, almost black. Because it is so dark, I found a simple stockinette stitch was enough. Any other stitch patterns I tried tended to be swallowed up by the sheer blackness of the fiber.

The buttons are handmade from deer antler. I thought the rustic nature of the buttons would work nicely with the rustic yarn.

Project number 2, completed while visiting the lovely state of Montana. This is a scarf or small shawl knitted using a skein Art Yarns silk and one of mohair. It is quite lovely and I'm happy with the result.

I used three skeins (doubled) of Pagewood Farm Denali sock yarn, in the color Mississippi Mud.

The buttons are handmade from a pretty, translucent stone.

Elizabeth Zimmerman's Birthday Party

EZ Books

Saturday was the highlight of the summer knitting season. We knitters gathered together to celebrate what would have been the 98th birthday of knitting genius Elizabeth Zimmerman. We gathered at the Rose and Ram in Independence, Oregon, to show our EZ creations, eat her favorite pound cake (pound of flour, pound of butter, pound of sugar, pound of eggs), and share our favorite EZ stories.

I took loads of pictures, which are in a photo album at my Flickr account. Please take a look, because there are some wonderful pictures of our beautiful EZ creations

Three Hats Down, Six Booties to Go!

Anna's Angel Hat

As I mentioned in a previous post, my co-workers are having babies at an alarming rate for a knitter trying vainly to keep up!

I've (mostly) finished three little hats, and am getting ready to start up on 3 pairs of little matching booties. Two of the three little hats (the ones for the baby girls) still need little knitted flowers. I'm going to knit those last, after I finish the booties and make sure I have enough matching yarn.

I'm running a little behind schedule, so forgive me if my posting life consists of nothing more that updates on brightly colored baby attire!!

With my work for the weekend complete, I can now turn my attention to my two knitting projects. The first is a scarf I'm knitting from two luscious pink yarns by Art Yarns. The dark, heavy pink is a three ply silk with beads named Beaded Rhapsody. It contains silk, glitter mohair and a strand of pre-strung beads. The lighter weight yarn is a silk mohair blend.

The combination of heavy and light weight yarns yields a beautiful open weave scarf.

The other project are a series of hats and booties for my colleagues at work who are having babies at a surprising rate. The yarn color is called "Crayon" and the yarn is produced by an outfit named Pagewood Farm. The yarn is spun and hand dyed from the fleece of the Blue Faced Leicester.

Both of these beautiful yarns were purchased at The Rose & Ram Knit Shop in Independence, Oregon.

New Zealand Pullover

New Zealand Pullover

The New Zealand Pullover is complete! I'm very pleased with how it turned out. I used a yarn called Peace Fleece and it was very lovely yarn with which to knit. The texture of the yarn improved greatly after I washed and blocked the sweater, and added a bit of conditioner to the rinse water. The yarn had been a little "crunchy" before I did that, but after the wash, it turned out to be very soft and lovely to the touch.

That is what I've been working on the last two weeks!
